Mitsui Chemicals Group in Singapore and SG Beach Warriors remove over 185kg of marine litter from Coney Island
Volunteers race against an incoming storm and rising tide to keep Singapore's coastline clean

Mitsui Chemicals Asia Pacific (MCAP) – A team of 13 volunteers from Mitsui Chemicals Group affiliates in Singapore and local environmental organization SG Beach Warriors (SGBW) removed more than 185kg of marine litter from Coney Island on 12 September 2026, despite challenging weather conditions that forced participants to work against an incoming storm and rising tide.

The coastal clean-up, organized under Mitsui Chemicals Group's global environmental initiative, Clean-up Caravan, saw volunteers collect more than 185kg of trash, filling 27 large bags and three extra-large bags in just two and a half hours.
The waste recovered revealed the persistent challenge of marine pollution along Singapore's shores. Among the items collected were close to 188 plastic containers, 60 plastic straws, 30 metal objects, 18 cigarette-related items, 12 discarded footwear items, 12 jerry cans, three pieces of e-waste, broken glasses, and a large industrial drum.
Volunteers also removed fishing nets, fishing lines and hooks, ropes, polystyrene foam pieces, plastic bags and wrappers, single-use plastic cutlery, face masks, soiled diapers, wooden pallet and planks, discarded furniture, and other bulky debris that washed ashore.

The amount and diversity of litter collected highlights the continued impact of improperly disposed waste on coastal ecosystems. Many of the recovered items pose risks to marine wildlife through entanglement, ingestion, and habitat degradation.
The clean-up was conducted in support of World Cleanup Day, a global movement that mobilizes staff volunteers to tackle waste pollution and raise awareness of sustainable waste management practices.

Launched in 2019, the Clean-up Caravan brings affiliates worldwide together to prevent litter from entering waterways and oceans. In Singapore, employees are encouraged to join these activities to better understand litter issues and promote proper waste disposal and recycling.
The event was part of a global movement that brings together volunteers around the world to address the issue of mismanaged waste.
